Cox was born in Petersburg, Virginia.[1] He studied political science and social science at James Madison University, graduating with bachelors degrees in both in 1979.[1]
Since 1990 Cox has been a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He currently[update] represents the 66th district south of Richmond, Virginia, made up of the city of Colonial Heights and part of Chesterfield County.[2] After the 2010 elections Del. Kirk Cox became majority leader in the Virginia House of Delegates and replaced Morgan Griffith (R) who was elected to the U.S. Congress on Nov. 2.
Cox is married to his wife Julia and has four sons. He resides in Colonial Heights. When Del. Cox is not busy at the Capitol he teaches AP government at Manchester High School in Chesterfield County.
Cox's first race against incumbent Chip Dicks gained a certain notoriety when it was reported in the pages of Playboy magazine. The publication's interest was apparently founded on the wordplay humor of a competition pitting "Cox" against "Dicks".
